What Causes Tired Eyes?

The eyes are one of the more sensitive areas of the face. Frequent contractions of the muscles near the eyes can result in the formation of fine lines and wrinkles. The collagen and elastin fibres found in the deeper layers of the skin maintain the skin's elasticity. As we age, the production of these fibres decreases causing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles around the eye area.  Other factors including under-lying medical conditions can also contribute to tired-looking eyes, particularly dark circles and puffiness.

What Are The Main Causes?

When combined with lifestyle, genetic, and environmental factors like pollution, smoking, exposure to UV rays or even lack of sleep, the condition of the eyes can appear worn down and tired looking.

Some common symptoms of tired eyes are:

  • Dark Circles: A dark, crescent-shaped area under the eyes.
  • Fine lines and wrinkles: Thin, fragile skin on the eyelids and under the eyes.
  • Redness: Visible thread veins or inflammation around the eyes
  • Puffiness: Swollen appearance above and below the eye area
  • Eye bags: Puffiness around the eyes, particularly the under-eye area
  • Sunken eyes: Thin skin surrounding the eye that has a hollow appearance
