What Are Age/ Sun Spots?

Age spots are small, flat dark spots on the surface of the skin. Liver spots, sunspots and solar lentigines are all common names for age spots. They can appear on any area of the body prone to frequent sun exposure including the hands, face, shoulders, chest and arms.

What Causes Them?

Overactive pigment cells cause age spots as a result of long periods exposed to ultraviolet (UV) light. When exposed to UV light, the skin produces melanin, a natural pigment that protects the layers of the skin from sun damage. As sun exposure increases over time, age spots can result because the skin has produced higher concentrations of melanin.

Those who have fairer skin are more likely to get age spots. The less melanin there is in the skin, the more prone to sun damage you are. Hence why the fairer the skin, the more likely you are to develop age spots as a result of frequent or intense sun exposure over time.
